Kawakawa pattern
My first go at writing out a pattern - eek.
Kawakawa Warmers
Here's the pattern stitch.
Thumbless Mitts
For
simpler mitts without a thumb,
Cast on 40 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Start pattern
Row 1: P2, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P1, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P2, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P1, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P2
Row 2 (and all even rows): K2, P8, K1, P8, K2, P8, K1, P8, K2
Row 3: P2, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P1, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P2, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P1, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P2
Row 5: P2, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P1, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P2, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P1, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P2
Row 7: P2, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P1, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P2, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P1, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P2
Row 9: P2, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P1, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P2, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P1, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P2
Row 11: P2, K8, P1, K8, P2, K8, P1, K8, P2
Knit 5 repeats of pattern (or however long you want your mitts to be)
Row 1 - 6: Knit garter stitch - decreasing 4 stitches evenly across first row of for snug fit around fingers.
Then
seam, leaving a gap for your thumb. I tend to pin them together and try
them on to get the thumb space just how I like it. Weave in your ends and then make another mitt. You now have a pair of Kawakawa mitts for toasty hands.
Adding a thumb
Cast on 40 stitches. Knit 6 rows. Start pattern
Row 1: P2, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P1, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P2, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P1, yo, K2, ssk, K4, P2
Row 2 (and all even rows): K2, P8, K1, P8, K2, P8, K1, P8, K2
Row 3: P2, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P1, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P2, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P1, K1, yo, K2, ssk, K3, P2
Row 5: P2, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P1, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P2, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P1, K2, yo, K2, ssk, K2, P2
Row 7: P2, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P1, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P2, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P1, K3, yo, K2, ssk, K1, P2
Row 9: P2, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P1, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P2, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P1, K4, yo, k2, ssk, P2
Row 11: P2, K8, P1, K8, P2, K8, P1, K8, P2
Knit 2 repeats of pattern and then Rows 1 - 10
Essentially you will use the middle two P2 stitches to create the thumb so continue with the pattern starting at row 11 with the extra instructions here for the thumb.
Row 11: P2, K8, P1, K8, PM, (P1, K1) into next stitch, (K1, P1) into next stitch, PM, then continue pattern to end (42 sts)
Row 12 (and all even rows up to Row 8) Pattern to marker, Purl the knits and knit the purls, SM, continue with pattern to end
Row 1: Pattern to marker, SM, P1, Kfb, Kfb, P1, SM, pattern to end (44 sts)
Row 3: Pattern to marker, SM, P1, K1, M1, K2, M1, K1, P1, SM pattern to end (46 sts)
Row 5: Pattern to marker, SM, P1, K1, M1, K4, M1, K1, P1, SM, pattern to end (48 sts)
Row 7: Pattern to marker, SM, P1, K1, M1, K6, M1, K1, P1, SM (pattern to end (50 sts)
Row 8: Pattern to marker, SM, K1, P1, M1, P8, M1, P1 - you now have 12 stitches ready for the thumb.
Knit the thumb
Turn work so RS is facing you.
CO 2 sts (now 14 stitches for thumb) and stst for 9 rows just across these 14 thumb stitches. CO loosely leaving enough yarn to sew up the thumb.
Stitch up the thumb - either mattress stitch or turn it inside out and just sew the seam.
Now we return to the abandoned Row 8!
Row 8 continued: PU and K 2 stitiches from the base of the thumb, then continue the row in pattern - should be K1, P8, K1, P8, K2. There are now 4 purl stitches in the middle where there were two
Row 9: Pattern to the 4 purl stitches, P2tog x 2, then continue pattern.
The thumb is now done!
Continue Row 11 and 12 as normal and then one more pattern repeat.
Knit 6 rows garter stitch - decreasing 4 stitches evenly across first row of for snug fit around fingers.
Seam, weave in ends and then make another mitt.
